November is National Diabetes Month
Today, 24 million Americans areliving with diabetes and 57 million more are at risk of developing type 2diabetes. In Lee County approximately 10.1 % of the adults are diabetic, ascompared to 9.2% state wide. Over time, if it’s not controlled, type 2 diabetescan lead to serious health problems like heart disease, stroke, and blindness.
Are you at risk? If you are 45 years or older, have high bloodpressure or are overweight you are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Ifyou are African American, Latino, American Indian, Alaska Native, AsianAmerican or Pacific Islander, you are at risk. If you have a parent, brother orsister with diabetes, you are at risk. The good news is that the way to yourheart, is through your stomach, so you can change how you eat and take steps tolower your chances.
